Now that you have all been brainstorming your SUPERCALIFRAGILISTIC IDEA for your Mobile Screenfest entry the next step is PLANNING! This is where you have to put your producer’s hat on and think about all the bits and bobs that need to come together to make the film work. For example it’s all very well to imagine you want hectic car chases and gun battles, screaming dinosaurs or a full 400 person dance routine but you have to think about logistics – how exactly you’re going to pull it off with just your iphone, a lightbulb, a harmonica and 50c in your pocket.

There are several key factors to getting your film just right and working the way you want it:

Lighting/Sound/Music

How you will set the scene or entice the viewer with the lighting and sound? Will you use realistic sound effects, or music? Natural lighting and setting or exaggerated, extravagant, fantastical scenery? Think about if you will use recorded music and sound, or make up your own music and score. Think about how natural sound, dialogue and music will interact in your film. You will most likely need to rerecord your sound after you have filmed for a better result so remember to factor this in to your planning.

Location/Actors/Styling

Scout locations in your local area that you can use. Go there and do a test run on your phone – how did it look? How did it sound? Too dark? Too much background noise? Who is going to be your talent? Friends? Family? Strangers? Your dog? Yourself? Rifle through op shops for costuming and props and get creative with your sets.

The key is to be prepared as much as possible and you will get the best result. Try to think of every possible factor that will make the film the best it can be on screen. Once you think you’ve got it all sorted out, you’re ready for the next step – FILMING!

Your Entry Part One: Brainstorm

We’ve given you lots of practical advice for filming with your mobile phone, but the most obvious place to start working on this year’s entry is your SUPERCALIFRAGILISTIC IDEA. How is your film going to wow the judges? How is your story going to grab people’s attention? What makes a great film image? What excites the ears and eyes and the mind? What makes a great storyteller?

A good way to start is to think about the films and documentaries you like. Watch lots and lots and lots and lots of film. Take notes. Tag your favourites. Talk your friends’ ears off. Why do you like them? What genre are they? What kind of lighting, mood, costumes, actors, sound, and editing do they use? Are they loud and fast or soft and slow? Are they quirky or musical or arty or funny? Then think about how you can emulate them.

Next brainstorm on the story YOU want to tell. Film is all about storytelling, visual storytelling, and mobile phones are like diaries – you can capture ANYTHING about the world around you (or what’s going on in your head) with them. Individuality is key – no one is going to make a mobile film just like you.

Next get all your friends and family on board to give you feedback on your story and script and rewrite, rejig and rework until you think its totally hot stuff. Then you’re ready for Part Two: Planning.

Welcome to the new website of Mobile Screenfest International 2011 and the new world of Mobbywood! Today our new website goes live with new Awards for this year's amazing festival, better integration with social media such as Youtube and Facebook and improvements to our blog, among many more. We took into account lots of feedback from our loyal fans and tried our best to make the website and the festival a whole lot cooler, funkier, bigger and better as you have requested. Some new changes with Mobile Screenfest International 2011 are:

We have introduced 2 new Awards - The Mobile Screenfest Junior Awards for Australians aged 15 and under which holds 2 awards - one in an Open category (for any type of story) and one Recycle themed story. Then there is also the Best International Film Award which is open to anyone in the world.

More prizes to come - this year we are casing our net wider for sponsors and should get more prizes for winners and finalists

More blogs and helpful hints - we are providing more information for fans to learn how to shoot, edit and upload their films. Planning your film

Have a script or storyboard to help you organise your thoughts.

Try to think about the location, time, cast of the film before hand.

Shooting your mobile film

Camera stability is very important. Use a tripod if you have one. If not, work on developing a steady grip.

Audio is the second most importan for your mobile film. Try using an external microphone if possible.

It is best to film outside in the sun for best lighting. If you are filming inside then make sure the subject is lit well.

Shoot in different angles, locations, backgrounds to make each shot visually exciting.

Editing

You can use iMovie for Mac and Moviemaker for Vista.

Organise all your shots into different folders and import the best shots into your editing software.

Make sure you save often.

Play around with sound, colour, adding visual effects to make your film more exciting.

Finally export your work as a finished movie.

Click colourful sceneries. This will bring more attention to your picture.
Maintain a distance from your target, of say one or to feet away.
Click portraits. Make sure there is a connection between your eye and the person.
Shoot in adequate light.
Shoot from different angles.
Make sure you have a uncluttered background.
Set the resolution of your camera phone to the highest.
Add different effects to your picture.

Digital Media Interns NEEDED for 2011

Araya Pictures is an innovative company in the film and digital entertainment industry. We are holding Mobile Screenfest International 2011, the sequel to Australia’s 1st Mobile Screenfest 2010 (the first mobile phone film festival of its kind in Australia), where ALL films and photographs have to be shot on a mobile phone. This exciting role is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the IT and digital media infrastructure and its innovative off-shoots as well as ‘e-marketing’ the festival. The role involves management of the festival and company websites, integration with mobile platforms, project managing aspects of development and liaison with festival partners, entrants and the broader community. There will be significant responsibility for developing and managing a fan base through social media channels such as our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube sites as well as other promotional tools.
This is a challenging internship that offers broad experience, working with talented people on innovation in converging film, digital media and mobile technology. We offer significant exposure and experience in a future-looking business that is making waves.
The internship is part-time (2-3 days a week), unpaid – 6 month minimum, starting immediately. There is a 3 months initial probation period.
Role specifics:
a. Management of Mobile Screenfest web platforms
b. Creative with enhancing the content of Mobile Screenfest website, working with outsourced programmers and graphic designers where required.
c. Managing festival entrants, enquiries and submissions
d. Project managing third parties associated with website enhancements (e.g. the possibility of mobile platforms, iPhone application, Augmented Reality components)
e. Working on marketing and social media strategies - such as developing and implementing new ideas on building and engaging a Facebook and Twitter fanbaseManaging interactions with festival partners and stakeholders where appropriate Engage with other other online forums/communities
f. Strong writing and proof reading skills
Skills and Capabilities:
o Experience in developing and managing interactive Content Management System based website
o Expertise in integrating films/ videos on a website
o Substantial knowledge of Facebook and Twitter tools and applications

Riding on the success of a big, big, BIG first year with a whopping 550 entries, the proud Mobile Screenfest teams wrapped up and rested in the month of Oct. The festival was a hugh success with the general feedback being highly positive in 3 areas:
1. People were blown away by the films shot on mobile - most people just could not believe the quality of the films that can be shot on a mobile phone these days - well done to the filmmakers (or non- filmmakers) that got out there and had a crack- you truly impressed!!
2. Everyone loved Amelia - our comedian host. She was quick witted, charming and an absolute riot! We may just have to invite her back next year....hmmm......
3. The overall 'smoothness' of the first event. Our comment from a punter "I came expecting a few people to be sitting round a table with a projector projecting films onto a screen in small pub..." . How wrong he was. From the celebs, to the funky Factory Theatre, to the crowd clapping and cheering as the films came on - this was not just a screening, this was a FILM PAR-TAY!!
Yes there was laughter, tears, unexpected winners and somewhat unusual dress senses ( dress code was funky casual, as it should be !!). But one things for sure , everyone agrees - next year's gonna be bigger......

And so it has already begun, the Mobile Screenfest 2011 team is born, with its first mission to seek our first major sponsor to help get the show on the road . Who will it be???? Can you help ??? Stay tuned for the next mobile chapter.......

Did you know that you can get HD camera quality photographs on your mobile phone? But then again, with Mobile Screenfest 2010, you don’t even need to. You just need to know how to use your mobile camera and here we will show you how!

 To understand the resolution and quality of your phone it is a good idea to take lots of photographs. Experiment by taking photos from lots of different angles as well, don’t just always shoot with the subject in the middle.

 To ensure the best quality pictures make sure you are still. Mobiles can pick up the slightest movement so try to rest your phone on a tripod or straight surface. Also try not to zoom as this can decrease image quality, instead get close to the subject so that it fills the viewfinder.

 Try to use as much lighting as possible. Use natural sun light or artificial light if needed. You should edit your photos afterwards so this is where you make any slight adjustments to the lighting.

So you are interested in shooting a video on your mobile phone but don’t know where to start? Worry not my friend, here I will present to you some top mobitips to help you learn how to shoot a great quality video for Mobile Screenfest 2010.

1. Planning: This is essential before you start to shoot your video. A good idea is to make a storyboard so you know all your camera angles. Also test your phone’s settings before starting as well, so test the zooming and lighting quality. Clean your camera lens to improve the picture.
2. Test Run: It’s always good to shoot a test run of your video. This can help you test video quality. ‘VGA’ is the top level, next is ‘QVGA’. Try not to use ‘QCIF’ as this is the poorest quality. You can also test audio levels in the test run and find if any changes to the settings need to be made.
3. Shooting: So you’re now ready to start shooting your final video. Try and shoot on a sunny day or use artificial lighting. Also mobiles pick up a lot of movement so try to be as still as possible. Finally make sure you fill the frame so try not to shoot from a distance. When saving your movie make sure it saves to the memory card and not the phone, you don’t want to loose all your hard work if your phone gets damaged!

Mobile phone film festivals around the world have been around as early as 2004, however Mobile Screenfest 2010 is the first of its kind in Australia. Entering into this competition could make your masterpiece a part of history!
If you are interested in the idea of film festivals shot on mobiles then you should look at some of the other mobile festivals around the world. Some big examples are:
 Mofilm USA: One of the biggest in the world with large prize pools and Hollywood talent.

Mobile Screenfest is not just an event. It is really latching on to a phenomenon that is getting bigger and bigger, shooting stuff on your mobile phone, and that is why it will be a huge success. I think the only thing stopping people from sending their videos of themselves, shot -on-mobile on a daily basis is 1. cost 2. embarrassment of having no make-up on or looking like shit in the morning. Costs of sending MMS' will come down, and people will become less embarassed about looking like crap as there is so much more wasteful material on the internet these days , so really - who cares??!!!

Although there is little I can advise about getting rid of morning drool apart from - "Go get cleaned up, you stinker ", here's a few pieces of advice from the Araya Pictures team on shooting on a mobile (the cheap and easy way to get famous!). Here's a few tips on shooting a photo on your mobile :

•Make sure you check and understand the resolution and quality of your phone, remember every phone is different.
•Get close to your subject. Make sure your fill up view finder.
•Light the area and subject really well. The more light the better the image will look. If you don't have natural light, make sure you use artificial light.
•Keep still. Made sound easy, but make sure you steady your camera phone.
•Try not and use your zoom. This can potentially reduce the quality of the image being taken. This can effect it even more when you go to edit your image later.

Hola Mobile Screenfest fans in cyberworld,
Imagine this, when they first invented text messages, none of the phone companies thought it would take off as well as it has done. They thought it would be a nice addition to phone calls, but only in small way. Today, we text almost more than we call. I may not have the facts to substantiate this statement, but hey, that's why I'm writing a moblog and not a research study.

But TODAY, we have to ability to RECORD ourselves and our messages - called MMS. What the heck is a Mobile Screenfest???!!!

Is it another Tropfest?

Is is another Youtube?

Is it another campaign run by a mobile phone company??

Australia's first Mobile Screenfest is probably the newest film festival in Australia and the first mobile phone film and photo festival of its kind in Australia. In this festival - ALL films and photos have to be shot on a mobile phone.

Crazy, huh?

So it is all of the above, and none of the above. It is an innovation in filmmaking and really bringing an international phenomenon to Australian shores. You see, late last year I went to LA for a film festival and very fortunately won an award for Best Directorial Debut. Even more fortunately I met with Prof Karl Bardosh, the world leading expert in "cellphone filmmaking" or Cellphone Cinema as they call it over there in the US. I wanted to bring innovation to filmmaking in Australia and after coming home and speaking to people in the film and mobile industry, it was clear that this was an awesome idea - Aussies were going to love this!!

But it has been a tremendously challenging journey so far, to create a festival that has never ever been done before in such a big way in Australia. This blog, will share with you the stories of how this festival was created, how we are going, our greatest challenges and victories, everything about Mobile Phone filmmaking and all the other shit that happens along the way.
